Stories and highlights
There's always something to celebrate at our school! From exciting events to proud moments and everyday wins, here are some of our highlights.
A year at our school
Book Week
Each year our school community comes together to celebrate Book Week with a colourful parade around the oval. Students and teachers showcase their creativity by dressing up as beloved characters from their favourite books, filling the day with imagination and fun.
The celebration continues with a special assembly, hosted by our library monitors. The day is a wonderful reminder of the power of reading and the way stories can inspire, connect, and bring our whole school community together.
Teddy Bears' Picnic
In Term 3, our K–2 students gather in Sturt Park for the annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic. The park is filled with laughter and excitement as students play games, sing songs and listen to special stories with their favourite teddy bears by their side.
Families join in the fun, spreading out picnic blankets and sharing lunch. It is a wonderful celebration of friendship, imagination and community spirit.
NAIDOC Week
Our school proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week each year. The celebrations began with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by an Elder, setting the tone for a week filled with learning and celebration.
Throughout the week, students work in mixed-age groups, rotating through a variety of activities including music, sport and arts and crafts. These sessions provided opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
The week concludes with a special assembly. Following the assembly, families gather for a picnic, enjoying the chance to sample a selection of delicious bush tucker. The celebrations always leave the school community with a greater appreciation of culture and a strong sense of togetherness.
Excursions
Excursions are an essential part of our students’ learning journey, offering exciting opportunities beyond the classroom to explore, discover and create lifelong memories. Year 3 students enjoy an overnight stay exploring Silverton, Year 4 visit Dubbo and sleep at the Zoo, while Years 5 and 6 alternate between Canberra and the Lake Burrendong Sport and Recreation Camp. These experiences enrich students’ understanding of the world, build independence and foster a sense of adventure and curiosity that lasts well beyond the trip itself.
Parent & Community Connections
Family and community connection events play a vital role in strengthening the bond between our school and community. These gatherings enhance the experience for everyone involved and often become the highlight of our school calendar. Special occasions like the Mother's Day and Father's Day Family Breakfasts bring families together, creating warm, memorable moments that celebrate and support our students’ learning and wellbeing.
Public Inter-School Sports Competitions
The Public Interschool sport competitions held in Week 10 of Terms 2 and 3, play a vital role in promoting teamwork, sportsmanship and physical fitness among students. The interschool events among the public schools in Broken Hill offer valuable opportunities for students to challenge themselves, build confidence, and develop new skills in a supportive environment. In the lead-up to the competitions, students engage in regular practice sessions, fostering dedication and school spirit while preparing to represent their school with pride.
